Hi all,

The SBHS Fencing Supporters’ Committee Meeting has been scheduled for Monday 08/04/2024 at 7:30pm online using Zoom.

The Zoom meeting link will be posted on ZSapp (Fencing Group) and hopefully sent to parent contact emails (once I manage to get a copy of the fencing parent contact list).

Please find the agenda attached below for your information:

Binh has provided a Slido link for parents to submit questions for the Q&A segment. Please familiarise yourself with the information provided on the SBHS Fencing website. If you have further questions, feel free to post them here ahead of the meeting:

Fencing Gloves and Borrowing Gear for Beginners – opportunity to buy a glove on Thursday 21/03/2024

Jeff from Swordsplay will be at the after-school Development training at the COLA on Thursday (21/03/2024 @ 3:15pm) to sell fencing gloves to all beginner fencers. If you wish to buy from him, please bring along $38 (cash or card – cash preferred but bring exact change).

If you miss this opportunity, you will need to find and buy your own glove.

No glove = no bouting!

Please also remember to return the signed Fencing Equipment Loan Agreement form ASAP as gear will be distributed for beginner fencers on Thursday during training. Copies of the form can be found outside the IA staffroom or download it from the previous Blog post. Please remember to bring a sports bag large enough to carry the gear!

Please contact Mr Huynh if you have any issues or questions.

Cheers,
Mr Huynh

Welcome to our new fencers – Borrowing fencing gear for the season

Congratulations and welcome to the SBHS Fencing program!

As a minimum safety requirement, all fencers must have their own fencing glove to protect their fencing hand during training and bouting.

New fencers will have a chance to purchase a glove from one of our school fencing equipment suppliers, Jeff Hardge, next Thursday 21/03/2024 at the start of the Development Training session in the cricket nets (3:15pm).

If you wish to buy a glove from Jeff Hardge, the cost is $38. He can take cash or card (cash preferred – bring exact change if you can).

If you prefer not to buy from Jeff or miss this opportunity, it will be your responsibility to source and buy your own fencing glove. You will not be permitted to fence without a fencing glove.

Please see www.sbhsfencing.com/uniform/where-to-buy-fencing-gear/ for more info on where you can buy gear.

Furthermore, I have copies of the Equipment Loan Agreement form for new fencers (link below) outside my staffroom (Industrial Arts Staffroom). You are required to read and sign it (by you and a parent/guardian) before you get access to borrow school equipment. The order that you return the form to me (you can leave it on my desk in my staffroom if you can’t find me), is the order you will get access to the gear to borrow.

If you wish to be at the front of the queue, print the form out at home, get it signed and returned to me ASAP!

Once you have done so, please make sure you bring a sports bag to training that is big enough to carry a fencing mask, underplastron and fencing jacket. This gear will be under your responsibility for the whole season.

Please let me know if there are any issues or questions.

I look forward to an enjoyable and rewarding season with you all!

Cheers,
Mr Dat Huynh

Fencing 2024 – Trials start next week

Hi all,

Not long to go before the Fencing season kicks off! Please be aware of the schedule for next week (starting Monday 11/03/2024):

  • Monday 11/03/2024: Year 7 Rotation – Try Fencing (after school 3:30pm to 5pm) – predetermined list from the year 7 Rotation program
  • Wed Senior Sport: All senior fencers to attend
  • Wed after school (3:30pm to 5pm): Development group trials (1 of 2)
  • Thurs Junior Sport: All junior fencers to attend
  • Thurs after school (3:30pm to 5pm): Development group trials (2 of 2)

Fencing gear is not required in this first week of trials as activities will be fitness and agility based. New fencers who make it into the program will have access to a set of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the season.

If you are a returning fencer (not your first season), please make sure you bring your own fencing gear (PPE: mask, jacket, breeches, underplastron, glove), particularly if you’re trying out for Squads.

Squad trials will be ongoing from the week starting 18/03 onwards. All fencers nominating for Squads are to attend relevant Squad training sessions and must bring their own PPE. Please keep an eye on announcements and Clipboard schedule.

We aim to finalise the list of fencers in the program by the end of next week. Clipboard rolls will be in flux and updated as we conduct our trials.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this busy period.
Please let me know if there are any issues or questions.

Kind regards,
Mr Dat Huynh
