Term 1 Week 10 – Updates

Hi all,

We’ve had a busy start to the season with record number of returning fencers to our program. We welcome our newest fencers who are joining us for their first season.

Squad selection is ongoing this week as we conduct trials during the after school sessions. Thank you for your patience as we make changes and updates to the Clipboard schedule to accommodate the trials with limited coaching staff availability this coming Monday. We are aiming to have Squad selection finalised by the end of Thursday’s sports session.

The U16 Foil Friendly hosted at SAC on Saturday was a huge success – we used this event as a trial run for managing the upcoming competition fixtures next term (with thanks to Kevin Chen’s (’21) inaugural role as DT in training, under the valuable mentoring of Edwin Lapitan (SAC)). The event ran relatively smoothly with 35 fencers participating and 6 schools represented. Congratulations to our U16 Foil fencers who achieved outstanding results – highlights and shoutout to Jeremy Yan for placing 1st and Jentzen Lim for placing 2nd in the event. Full results can be found on the ‘Results’ page.

Regarding Fencing T-shirts – we are in the process of finalising the payment process as this item is organised by the Fencing Committee and not the High Store. Please do not contact the High Store to inquire about the Fencing shirt. We will post an update soon when the payment system is set up and ready for orders.

The Fencing Supporters Meeting will also be scheduled soon (aiming for 6pm Thursday in week 11) so please keep an eye out for updates during the week.

Thanks for your patience and support as we gear up for a busy season ahead. Please feel free to contact me if there are any issues or questions.

Best regards,
Dat Huynh

U16 Foil Friendly on Saturday 29/03/2025 – Expression of Interest

Hi all,

Edwin from St Aloysius’ College (SAC) has invited us to participate in a friendly U16 Individual Foil event this coming Saturday, hosted at SAC. Barker and St Ignatius are also invited. This event is planned to run from 8am to 12pm.

As we have not yet finalised our U16 foil squad selection, I am opening this up to all U16 Foil fencers who wish to participate on a first come first serve basis. This event is free and would be valuable experience for our younger foilists to get ready for competition season next term.

If you wish to fence in this event, please make sure you complete the Google form by Wednesday sport time (1pm) so that I can relay info to Edwin and organise coaches and staff supervision.

The google form link can be found here (only fill it in if you are an U16 Foil fencer):
https://forms.gle/e6i8X6FRnKqfANFv8

More information will be provided soon.
Please keep an eye on your student email for direct comms with selected students.

Cheers,
Mr Huynh

Welcome to our new fencers – Borrowing fencing gear for the season

Congratulations and welcome to the SBHS Fencing program!

As a minimum safety requirement, all fencers must have their own fencing glove to protect their fencing hand during training and bouting.

New fencers will have a chance to purchase a glove from one of our school fencing equipment suppliers, Jeff Hardge, next Thursday 27/03/2025 at the start of the Development Training session in the cricket nets (3:15pm).

If you wish to buy a glove from Jeff Hardge, the cost is $40. He can take cash or card (cash preferred – bring exact change if you can).

If you prefer not to buy from Jeff or miss this opportunity, it will be your responsibility to source and buy your own fencing glove. You will not be permitted to fence without a fencing glove.

Please see www.sbhsfencing.com/uniform/where-to-buy-fencing-gear/ for more info on where you can buy gear.

Furthermore, please read the Equipment Loan Agreement form for new fencers that was handed out to new Junior fencers today (link below). If you are a new Senior Fencer, please print out the form or get a copy from me in the IA staffroom. You are required to read and sign it (by you and a parent/guardian) before you get access to borrow school equipment. The order that you return the form to me (you can leave it on my desk in my staffroom if you can’t find me), is the order you will get access to the gear to borrow. We plan to distribute gear next Thursday!

If you wish to be at the front of the queue, print the form out at home, get it signed and returned to me ASAP!

Once you have done so, please make sure you bring a sports bag to training that is big enough to carry a fencing mask, underplastron and fencing jacket. This gear will be under your responsibility for the whole season.

Please let me know if there are any issues or questions.

I look forward to an enjoyable and rewarding season with you all!

Cheers,
Mr Dat Huynh

Fencing 2025 – Try Outs start next week

Hi all,

Not long to go before the Fencing season kicks off! Please be aware of the schedule for next week (starting Wednesday 19/03/2025):

  • Wed Senior Sport: All senior fencers to attend
  • Wed after school (3:30pm to 5pm): Junior Development group trials (1 of 2)
  • Thurs Junior Sport: All junior fencers to attend
  • Thurs after school (3:30pm to 5pm): Junior Development group trials (2 of 2)

Fencing gear is not required in this first week of trials as activities will be fitness and agility based. New fencers who make it into the program will have access to borrow a set of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the season.

If you are a returning fencer (not your first season), please make sure you bring your own fencing gear (PPE: mask, jacket, breeches, underplastron, glove), particularly if you’re trying out for Squads.

Squad trials will be ongoing from the week starting 24/03 onwards. All fencers nominating for Squads are to attend relevant Squad training sessions and must bring their own PPE. Please keep an eye on announcements and Clipboard schedule.

We aim to finalise the list of fencers in the program by the end of next week. Clipboard rolls will be in flux and updated as we conduct our trials.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this busy period.
Please let me know if there are any issues or questions.

Kind regards,
Mr Dat Huynh
