As we work towards finalising our squads for this season to determine our representatives for external competitions, please make yourselves aware of the updated rules and expectations from NSWFA’s website:
https://nswfencing.org.au/home/schools/

A quick summary of information is provided here:

  • 29/08/2020 – Roberta Nutt Intermediate Individuals (year 7, 8, 9)
  • 12/09/2020 – Roberta Nutt Senior Individuals (year 10, 11, 12)
  • We are still awaiting more information regarding Team Competitions
  • Only students, teachers and coaches will be permitted to attend the competitions – parents can’t be admitted due to space constraints/social distancing policy

We aim to finalise squad selections in the coming week or two – please don’t miss training! We look forward to welcoming back our students from the Athletics program.

Please contact Mr Huynh if there are any issues or questions.

Fencing Squad tryouts resuming next week

As restrictions are lifting and we are coordinating with NSWFA for potential competitions in Term 3, all experienced fencers (year 8 onwards) who wish to participate in competitions are advised to attend the following Fencing training sessions next week as part of Squad tryouts:

  • Senior Fencers on Wednesday 1-3pm
  • Junior Fencers on Thursday 3:30pm to 5pm

Squad selection is required if you wish to represent SBHS in the competitions.

Please contact Mr Huynh if there are any issues or questions.

Glove purchase option for new fencers

Jeff Hardge from Swordsplay will be at training on Thursday (11/06/2020 @ 2:30pm) to sell Fencing gloves. If you wish to buy from him, please have $28 exact change ready on the day.

If you miss this opportunity, you must source your own fencing glove as you will not be permitted to fence without one.

For more info, please visit: www.sbhsfencing.com/uniform/

Fencing gear requirements for the season

Returning fencers (year 8 to 12) are expected to have their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This includes:

  • Glove
  • Underplastron
  • Jacket
  • Breeches
  • Mask

Please make sure you get this sorted ASAP as no gear sharing will be permitted and you cannot fence without proper PPE.

New fencers:

Please make sure you return your Equipment Loan Agreement Form to Mr Huynh in the Industrial Arts Staffroom by Tuesday 09/06/2020.

If you choose to buy your own gear, you will not need to submit the form.

Fencing Training update – Extended Winter Sport season

Hi all,

I’ve been informed that the school intends to extend the Winter Sport season until week 9 of Term 3. As such, we will update our Fencing Program accordingly to comply with the School and Department policies.

One of the updates to our program is the streamlining of training sessions. Please check the Training page on the website for the proposed Training Schedule:

https://sbhsfencing.com/training/

For now, we will focus on delivering consistent training sessions that cover fitness, agility and core fencing skills to help develop our students’ fencing.

There will be no Saturday sport commitments at this current time until we get further notice from the Department and School Executive.

Please contact Mr Huynh if you have any issues or questions.

Cheers and stay safe,

Mr Dat Huynh

Fencing Training will be starting again next week (Wed and Thurs 27 & 28/05/2020)

Hi all,

With the updated directive for schools to resume classes as per normal from Monday 25/05/2020, Winter sport will also be able to resume training within a limited capacity.

For the moment, Winter Sports such as Fencing are limited to training only during the allocated school sport time:

  • Senior Fencers (year 10, 11, 12): 1pm to 3pm on Wednesdays (starting 27/05/2020)
  • Junior Fencers (year 7, 8, 9): 1pm to 3pm on Thursdays (starting 28/05/2020)

Training will be modified to accomodate the safety regulations on shared space and equipment.

I will be working with our coaching team to develop drills and activities for our students to work on relevant skills and fitness for fencing.

As the situation evolves, I will continue to update you on the changes to our program and policies.
Please contact me if there are any issues or questions.

I look forward to welcoming you all back to school next week,

Mr Dat Huynh

All Sports have been suspended at SBHS until further notice

We have been informed that all SBHS sports sessions are suspended until further notice.

As we are transitioning to online learning, please ensure you make some time for physical activity in your daily routine at home to maintain a healthy mind and body.

There are many resources online to help you with your fencing training at home. One of my particular favourites for fencing tips and footwork exercises is this YouTube channel:

Stay curious, active, and safe.
Please feel free to contact me if there are any issues or questions.

Update regarding After School Fencing Training and Saturday Fencing Activities

Hi all,

This message is to inform you of the current developments affecting the SBHS Fencing Program and Saturday fencing activities so we can plan accordingly.

We were recently informed about the DET directive for schools to adopt social distancing measures:

“All major arts, sports and initiative activities and events will temporarily be ceased until further notice. This includes whole-school sporting events and inter-school events involving three or more schools.”

Our school is currently reviewing our procedures and planning accordingly as the situation develops.

The following school policies are now in effect:

  • All after school training has been suspended until further notice (all sports affected).
  • All Saturday sports (fixtures, competitions) has been suspended until further notice (all sports affected).
  • Students can continue to attend timetabled sport (Seniors on Wed 1pm – 3pm, Juniors on Thurs 1pm – 3pm).

We will update you with information as we become aware of any changes to the plans in place for the SBHS Fencing program.

Please feel free to contact me if there are any issues or questions.

Best regards,

Dat Huynh
