Opportunity to buy a Fencing Glove for New Fencers and Borrowing Fencing Gear for the Season
Congratulations and welcome to the SBHS Fencing program!
As a minimum safety requirement, all fencers must have their own fencing glove to protect their fencing hand during bouting.
New fencers will have a chance to purchase a glove from one of our school fencing equipment suppliers, Jeff Hardge, this Thursday 30/03/2023 at the start of the Development Training session in the cricket nets (3:30pm).
If you wish to buy a glove from Jeff Hardge, please bring $33 cash (no card facilities – exact change if you can).
If you prefer not to buy from Jeff or miss this opportunity, it will be your responsibility to source and buy your own fencing glove. You will not be permitted to fence without a fencing glove.
Please see www.sbhsfencing.com/uniform/where-to-buy-fencing-gear/ for more info on where you can buy gear.
Furthermore, I will be distributing the Equipment Loan Agreement form (link below) during training tomorrow that requires you to read and sign (by you and a parent) before you get access to borrow school equipment. The order that you return the form to me (you can leave it on my desk in my staffroom if you can’t find me), is the order you will get access to the gear to borrow.
If you wish to be at the front of the queue, print the form out at home, get it signed and returned to me tomorrow!
Once you have done so, please make sure you bring a sports bag to training that is big enough to carry a fencing mask, underplastron and fencing jacket. This gear will be under your responsibility for the whole season.
Please let me know if there are any issues or questions.
May the Force be with you,
Mr Dat Huynh

Upcoming NSWSFL Individual Foil Events
Forwarding information from Edwin Lapitan (SAC) regarding the upcoming NSWSFL Individual Foil Events:
Thanks to St Ignatius College, Riverview (c/o Andrew S) and Barker College (c/o Steve A), the NSWSFL is able to host the following Inter-school Individual Foil competition on these 3 weekends (Edwin Lapitan (SAC) is managing these individual events):
| Date | Event | Age Groups | Venue | Provide No of Fencers | Send Names of Fencers |
| 20 Aug | Inter-school Individual Foil | U16 | SIC-Riverview | 11 Aug | 18 Aug |
| 3 Sep | Inter-school Individual Foil | U14 | Barker College | 25 Aug | 1 Sep |
| 10 Sep | Inter-school Individual Foil | U16 | Barker College | 1 Sep | 8 Sep |
Start time will be 8:00am (we will send venue details a week before the events). So far, our school list is as follows:
- Barker College
- St Aloysius’ College
- St Ignatius College, Riverview
- Sydney Boys HS
- Sydney Grammar School
- Wenona School
- The Hills Grammar School
We are targeting a field of a maximum of 40 fencers for each competition day so it would be great to put an initial cap of 6 fencers per school. If some schools are not able to use the allocation of 6 fencers, we can hand over “unused” slots to other schools who wish to field more than 6 fencers. If you have a lot of Under 16 fencers, an option would be to send some to the first event on 20 Aug and then another set to the second event on 10 Sep. We would appreciate if you can please let me know your numbers and fencer names using the schedule above.
Format will be as follows:
- Mixed genders in both poules and DE
- Regular poules – 5 hits, 3 mins
- Depending on the numbers and timing, we may promote to the DEs only a complete tableau (e.g., if there are 40 fencers and we’re running late, we will only promote 32).
- U16 DEs will be 15 points, 3 periods x 3 mins
- U14 DEs will be 10 points, 2 periods x 3 mins
- No match for 3rd place (i.e., there will be equal thirds)
Please note: As the SBHS Fencing training season is over, this event is voluntary for our fencers.
Please email Mr Huynh ASAP and by Wednesday 3pm at the latest if you would like to participate and indicate which event you want to attend. If there are more fencers interested than the positions allocated, slots will be determined by internal ranking data. Gear can be borrowed from the COLA during Lunch 1 on Thursday.
