Fencing Training starts Wednesday 16/03/2022

Thank you to all students who completed the try-out form.

As Rowing students are preparing for HOTR and 1st and 2nd grade teams have their final GPS matches on Thursday, the try-out process will begin during the allocated training sessions next week (week 7) and continue the week after to ensure all students who filled in the try-out form have a chance to be assessed for the program.

Students trying out for Squads are expected to have their own whites (mask, jacket, underplastron, breeches, glove) and be ready for electric fencing at every training session. They may borrow body wires, lames and weapons during training. Squad selection will start with U19 Squads and work down to fill U16 then U14 Squads.

New and returning Development Fencing students will work on fitness and agility skills as part of the physical try-out process. Fencing gear will not be required for new and returning fencers in the first 2 weeks of training until try-outs have concluded.

The training schedule for next week is as follows (UPDATED AS OF 13/03/2022):

Week 7: 16/03/2022 Wednesday Senior Sport (year 10 to 12): 1:10pm – 3:00pm
COLA is being used by 1st Grade Cricket to prepare for their final GPS match on Thursday.
Fencers to use outdoor basketball courts for drills and warm up bouts. If raining, relocate to the Great Hall.
Week 7: 16/03/2022 Wednesday After School: 3:30pm to 5pm

Fencing Try-outs 2022

To all SBHS students,

If you intend to try out for the SBHS Fencing program this year, please complete the try-out form below:

https://forms.gle/rZx5RDjd8Ho4pKHU9

Please have this task completed by Tuesday 08/03/2021 as we need time to plan resources and set up pools for Squad tryouts in week 7.

Make sure you have also nominated Fencing on your Sports Selection Ballot. The Google Form is part of the try-out process and does not guarantee your selection.

Due to the demand and limited places, students who do not follow instructions to fill in the try-out form may be cut and will not be able to progress to physical try-outs in week 7.

Returning Fencing gear

Hi all,

Welcome back to Term 4 – we’re glad to have our students back on campus. It is unfortunate to have our season cut short, but we still need to organise equipment returns and conduct a stock take to plan for repairs and purchases for next season.

ATTENTION STUDENTS WHO LEFT GEAR IN THE STORE ROOM: As we have switched to the summer sport season, the store room has been cleared out. If you have left any fencing gear in there, please collect it ASAP from Mr Huynh. There are some items found in the store room that are loaned to beginner fencers – Remember that it is your responsibility to collect, clean and return your gear. It must be inspected by the MIC to sign off on your loan contract forms!

Please collect your gear from Mr Huynh ASAP!

Beginner fencers who have borrowed gear for the season:

I am organising return dates and times for different year groups to help keep the year groups separated. Please meet Mr Huynh and/or Assistant Armourer, Louise Flint, at the COLA at the following dates and times for gear return (PLEASE BE ON TIME):

Year 11 (now 12) beginner fencers: Wednesday 03/11/2021 @ the beginning of Recess (11:10am)

Year 9 beginner fencers: Thursday 04/11/2021 @ the beginning of Recess (11:10am)

Year 7 beginner fencers: Tuesday 09/11/2021 @ before school (8:30am onwards)

Year 8 beginner fencers: Wednesday 10/11/2021 @ the beginning of Recess (11:10am)

Please make sure all equipment is cleaned before returning! Tips for cleaning can be found here: https://sbhsfencing.com/uniform/personal-fencing-gear/

If there was any damage (accidental or otherwise) to any loaned items, it must be reported so that we can repair and/or replace the item before next season starts. Please help keep our loaned equipment safe for everyone!

Other loaned out equipment by Squad Fencers (for competitions etc.) can be returned directly to Mr Huynh. Please do so ASAP and see me in the Industrial Arts Staffroom to have the item checked off.

If you have any issues or questions, please contact Mr Huynh.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Staying fit at home with Fencing workout tips!

Hi all,

I wanted to share with you a Fencing channel on YouTube that our very own Sabre Coach, Yoongi, has just started:

Swordsman in Aus: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCan9GN2D6DicIY4sELVT0zw

We encourage all of our students to stay active during this lockdown period and hope this resource can help you reach your fencing goals for next season!

Stay safe and well,

Training and competitions are suspended until further notice

Hi all,

Welcome back to term 3. As we are moving to online learning due to the ongoing lockdown, all training and competitions are suspended until further notice.

Please stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.

Stay safe and take care, everyone!

No holiday fencing training

Due to the updated COVID-19 lockdown restrictions outlined today, the holiday fencing training session is cancelled.

Please try to stay fit and active during this holiday break. Here is a good YouTube channel (Fencer’s Edge) to help you train and learn more about fencing concepts while in lockdown at home:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCndKNCqgmw8sAvcYoRboevg

I also like this channel that challenges and expands on fencing concepts to improve your fencing (S-Class channel):

Hope you have a safe and productive holiday break.

Cheers,

Holiday Fencing Training

Due to the recent update on Stay At Home orders today, there will be no holiday Fencing Training in the first week of the holidays.

Pending the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions at the end of next week, we will schedule a training session in the second week on Wednesday 07/07/2021 from 1pm to 4pm at the COLA. Students in all 3 weapons are invited to attend on a voluntary basis. Coaches and Mr Huynh will be present to supervise.

Please keep an eye on the SBHS Fencing website and SZapp for up to date news and information. If restrictions are ongoing, I will notify you with the cancellation of the session via those channels.

Also, remember to allocate time for fitness during the holidays – at the very least, skipping rope, jogging and footwork drills at home will help keep you sharp and ready for the competitions coming up in Term 3.

Hope you all have a safe and enjoyable holiday break.

Cheers,
Mr Dat Huynh
